The Importance of a Mentor

Mentors are such a valuable part of a leader's growth within their professional career. Finding the right one where you can be vulnerable and open is at the heart of this relationship and this can't happen without trust.

Some of the benefits of having a mentor in your life are:

Accountability: Having someone hold you accountable in life may not be the most enjoyable part of this relationship, but there is great value in this for your development as a leader. Inevitably, it helps you to take inventory of where you are and of the blind spots that can impact your progress on the journey you are on.

Gain new perspectives: It can be easy to become stagnate and get stuck in your professional growth, especially if you are isolated or always around the same people most of the time. A mentor will help you to think outside the box and broaden your horizons by challenging you to step outside of your comfort zone.

Develop leadership skills: A mentor will continually help you grow in every aspect of your life. You will become a stronger leader in your life and at home. They can show you new skills and teach you things you may have never known before that you can implement in your professional and personal life.

Some of the questions to consider when you think about working with a mentor:

1. Is this a person I can trust?

2. What do I want to know more of? What do I want to learn?

3. Am I still learning or have I outgrown my mentor?

4. Will I be open to hearing feedback?
